چکیده

The lubrication regime in which artificial hip joints operate adds complexity to the prediction of wear, as the joint operates in both the full fluid film regime-specifically the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regime-and the mixed or boundary lubrication regimes, where contact between the bearing surfaces results in wear. In this work, a wear model is developed which considers lubrication for the first time via a transient EHL model of metal-on-metal hip replacements. This is a framework to investigate how the change in film thickness influences the wear, which is important to further investigation of the complex wear procedure, including tribocorrosion, in the lubricated hip implants. The wear model applied here is based on the work of Sharif et al. who adapted the Archard wear law by making the wear rate a function of a relative film thickness nominalized by surface roughness for examining wear of industrial gears. In this work, the gait cycle employed in hip simulator tests is computationally investigated and wear is predicted for two sizes of metal-on-metal total hip replacements. The wear results qualitatively predict the typical wear curve obtained from experimental hip simulator tests, with an initial "running-in period" before a lower wear rate is reached. The shape of the wear scar has been simulated on both the acetabular cup and the femoral head bearing surfaces. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Determining material loss from the femoral stem trunnion in hip arthroplasty using a coordinate measuring machine.

In contrast to the articulating and taper surfaces of failed total hip replacements, volumetric wear analysis of trunnions is not routinely performed. Metal wear particles from the trunnion may contribute not only to the failures of metal-on-metal total hip replacements but also to all hip replacements utilising metal trunnions. A validation study was performed with the material removed in stag...

The effect of metal ions in solution on bacterial growth compared with wear particles from hip replacements.

The biological significance of cobalt-chromium wear particles from metal-on-metal hip replacements may be different to the effects of the constituent metal ions in solution. Bacteria may be able to discriminate between particulate and ionic forms of these metals because of a transmembrane nickel/cobalt-permease. It is not known whether wear particles are bacteriocidal. We compared the doubling ...

CoCrMo metal-on-metal hip replacements.

After the rapid growth in the use of CoCrMo metal-on-metal hip replacements since the second generation was introduced circa 1990, metal-on-metal hip replacements have experienced a sharp decline in the last two years due to biocompatibility issues related to wear and corrosion products. Despite some excellent clinical results, the release of wear and corrosion debris and the adverse response o...

The Bearing Surfaces in Total Hip Arthroplasty – Options, Material Characteristics and Selection

During total hip arthroplasty, both the femoral and acetabular bearing surfaces are surgically replaced with metallic, polymeric, and/or ceramic components. Throughout the twentieth century, many different combinations of these materials have been proposed and examined as bearing surfaces for total hip arthroplasty. Metal-on-metal total hip replacements were first implanted by Wiles in the 1930...

Graphitic tribological layers in metal-on-metal hip replacements.

Arthritis is a leading cause of disability, and when nonoperative methods have failed, a prosthetic implant is a cost-effective and clinically successful treatment. Metal-on-metal replacements are an attractive implant technology, a lower-wear alternative to metal-on-polyethylene devices. Relatively little is known about how sliding occurs in these implants, except that proteins play a critical...
